dark_helmet's 2010 Ford Mustang Coupe review

The Mustang I purchased was initially not what I had in mind when I was deciding on a fun-to-drive vehicle after coming back from Afghanistan -- I had the Camaro in mind. But, I'm glad I was steered to the Mustang after all was said and done! I purchased the 2010 Mustang in the V6 Premium trim with Sync/Nav and an automatic transmission. This car rides better than any vehicle I've ever driven; the GT suspension is smooth and handles curves at speed without even a stutter when sticking to the road. The only thing it's missing is the pseudo-manual shifting offered in the Camaro automatic. However, the shifting is responsive -- stomping on the gas yields a swift response from the drivetrain. The exterior looks great; the wheels are finally in good proportion to the rest of the car. The interior with the leather seats is extremely comfortable -- the dash and controls are solid with a good feel. The SYNC is great; Sirius TraveLink is a great addition -- seemed like an "extra" at first, but now I don't see going without it now! On top of it all, the fuel efficiency of the V6 comes through on daily driving. My commutes are relatively short, but I take the occasional weekend drive. Although it's not geared necessarily towards the "Green" crowd, it's a good pick for those who want sporty but still consider efficiency a factor in purchasing a sports car.

    Three things:

    1. The removable panel on the right side of the interior passenger side foot well keeps coming off no matter how much you try to avoid doing so. It's kind of flimsy to begin with, but the snap-in connector that's supposed to keep it in place keeps losing its grip. Unacceptable for a car that I spent the $$ I did on it.

    2. The V6 delivers adequate power for those times when you want that kick in acceleration. But, did Ford absolutely have no clue that Chevy would come out with a comparable V6 that would beat them out by over 90 hp in 2009? That's the reason why I looked at the Camaro *first*, then Mustang. The dealership I went to and the 6-month wait for the Camaro were what steered me across the street to the Ford dealership. The only saving grace for the 4.0L V6 is the healthy aftermarket for Mustang V6 performance parts, which I will be delving into once I save up the $$ for some upgrades. C'mon Ford, give the Mustang the EcoBoost option -- heck, I'll even get in line to get *my* Mustang an EcoBoost upgrade!!

    3. The use of plastic on the exterior, especially on the tops of the rear-view mirrors, was kind of an unpleasant surprise. That stuff scratches *too* easily; I'd like to preserve the look of my 'Stang for a good long while. Plastic exterior "touches", where painted sheet metal should be, don't contribute to that goal very well.

overall a good car, the problem with it for me is mostly in design. The specs on all versions are decent, though you pay considerably more for each version as you go up, the Rousch level 1, 2, or 3, and the Shelby versions give you a bit more for your money but they should! My big complaint is that they, as the dealer told me, have tried to be "competitive" in their styling to go up against the Camaro. One of the biggest appeals for Mustangs for me over the years is that they don't try to copy anyone's body style and look unique, sexy and fun. The front end has stayed relatively the same as prior modles, but the backside looks decidedly similar to the Camaro's.

    Improvement Suggestions

Stop trying to be another car company and go back to being unique and true to the Mustang's heritage! Don't base your design "innovations" off of what Chevy and Dodge are doing.

The 2010 Mustang Shelby GT500 looks good, runs great, and is a real head turner. I do not have anything bad to say about it. I like the fact that the back seats are not adult size. I don't get asked to haul people around. I have owned four Mustangs since 2005 (2005 drop top V6, 2006 hard top V6, 2007 GT which did well at street nighs at the local drag strip, and this 2010 Shelby GT500). The car feels big to me inside and out with out being too big (I grew up driving little FIATS and Honda CRX). The car sounds so good I tend to drive it by sound and that is not good for the gas mileage... But SPM (smile per mile) are high and make up for it.

The seat belt cuts across my neck, I wish you could adjust it down (maybe I'll get a 5 point harness).
My hand covers the high end of the tach so it is hard to see when approaching redline. A FIAT I owned had a tach that ran right to left to avoid this problem.
I think the 2011 did everything else I would have mentioned. Lighter, more HP.

Big V8, what's not to like? The car is a blast and looks great. Interior has been greatly improved voer previous model years.

    Improvement Suggestions

My only minor complaint is that when the stick is in the 1-3-5 positions it's a bit tight around the A/C controls. I guess if you had an automatic it wouldn't be a problem, but where is the fun in that?

Jorge Ortega's 2010 Ford Mustang Coupe review

As soon as a young man comes across with some money, before the new wardrobe or the $300+ dates, the words "New Car" flash across his head. And what does that young man buy? In Miami? A BMW 3 series. In the rest of the sane continental US? A Ford Mustang GT. You cannot go wrong with this car especially this fresh new take on an already battle-tested design. Out of more expensive foreign cars, the Mustang stands out with its classic looks when parked among them. It just makes the rest look boring. The original pony car has plenty of power with its 281 ci V8 and with a good driver can keep up with its more potent rivals (Proven in a race). A Mustang buyer knows that there are some sacrifices to be made. The interior is a little plain when compared to equally priced models and the suspension is still from the stone age but that doesn't matter because its a Mustang. A Mustang has always been the value sports car of the market and the V6 delivers a lot of fun for a reasonable price. However, if you want performance, you need to get a really good one. If money is not an issue, the rare models are the ones you want especially because of their high resale value. With the souped up 2011 model on the way, if you are considering this car, WAIT! Overall, the Mustang is a car that looks equally great in a street racer's one man pad, or a posh 6 car garage.

    Improvement Suggestions

For god's sake, get rid of that suspension and lose some weight. It completely zaps the car in the corners.
